Consumer Tips
Consumer Tips

The freedom.nsnet.org is a free classifieds service to assist consumers and professionals in Nova Scotia searching for quality used disability/health products or aids. When purchasing used equipment consider the following for avoiding possible problems and being happy with your purchase.

  • Decide in advance exactly what you want and what you can afford.

  • Are your needs short term or long term? Consider the Canadian Red Cross Society Health Equipment Loan Service for seniors. Loan depots are throughout the provinces that generally carry an inventory of crutches, canes, walkers, wheelchairs, commodes, raised toilet seats and bathroom aids. • Ask friends or family for recommendations or advice based on their experiences.

  • Shop around and compare prices if at all possible.

  • Is the product in good working condition?

  • Ask the previous owner why they no longer are using the equipment and are there any problems they experienced with the product.

  • Is the product is still under warranty?

  • Does the manufacturer still exist? When requiring replacement parts it may difficult to find them.

  • Does the manufacturer still carry that line of product and are replacement parts and service available?

  • Seek the advice of a professional whenever possible; such as your local occupational therapist, physiotherapist, VON and or a local support group or agency. In the case of technology such as computers and or assistive technology find someone who is familiar with these products.

  • Can you try it before you buy it?

  • Is it the right size for you? Consult with an occupational therapist to assist with this.

  • Is it comfortable for you? Especially if you plan to be sitting for an extended length of time.

  • Will the product cause any skin breakdown problems?

  • Does it maximize your functional abilities? Consult with an occupational therapist.

  • Is there another product that would better meet your functional everyday needs? Consult with equipment companies and or an occupational therapist.
